Some of its best-known landmarks include Plaza Independencia, Puerta de la Ciudadela, the Sarandí pedestrian street, the Auditorio Nacional del Sodre, Montevideo Metropolitan Cathedral, Teatro Solís, Plaza Matriz, and Mercado del Puerto.
